BulletVPN Review (2024)

BulletVPN is a robust VPN service offering multiple protocols, unlimited bandwidth, and support for up to three simultaneous connections. It also provides a Smart DNS feature, cross-platform compatibility, and a comprehensive 30-day money-back guarantee.

Features

BulletVPN, based in Estonia, operates 52 servers across 30 countries. Its user interface is clean and intuitive, making navigation through essential functions—such as server selection, support tickets, invoices, downloads, and affiliate options—effortless. While users can input personal details such as address and payment information, this step is optional, allowing those concerned about privacy to skip it.

The dashboard also displays detailed account activity, including login history, usage data, and online hours. While this level of transparency may be useful to some, it does raise concerns about logging practices, a sensitive issue within the VPN industry. However, BulletVPN is upfront about the data it retains.

BulletVPN supports a wide range of platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Apple TV, Roku, Smart TVs, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles. There are also dedicated VPN apps for devices like Android TV, Nvidia Shield TV, Amazon Fire TV, and FireStick. Setup guides and a knowledge base are readily available, though installation is straightforward and quick.

The BulletVPN Windows client is user-friendly, featuring a clean design with easy access to server lists, sorting options, and favorite server markers. During testing, the performance was stable, with no freezing or disconnection issues. Support is primarily handled via a ticketing system, and while not instant, responses are reasonably prompt.

The client supports multiple VPN protocols, including PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN, with options for TCP and UDP within OpenVPN. There are minimal customization options, apart from the ability to launch the client at startup. For advanced users, OpenVPN configuration files are available.

BulletVPN permits P2P file-sharing and streaming of geo-restricted content, all without imposing bandwidth limits.

Pricing

BulletVPN is priced at $10.98 for a monthly subscription, $54.98 for six months, and $89.98 for an annual plan. Regardless of the plan, users receive strong encryption, unlimited server switches, access to five different VPN protocols, and unlimited bandwidth, along with Smart DNS capabilities.

Payment methods include PayPal, credit cards, Bitcoin, wire transfers, prepaid cards, and e-wallets. While there is no free trial, the service offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. Though BulletVPN’s Terms of Service do not explicitly state the need to justify refund requests, users may be asked to provide feedback upon requesting a refund based on personal experience.

BulletVPN provides solid VPN features with an emphasis on ease of use and platform compatibility. While the logging transparency may raise concerns for some, the overall performance, wide range of supported devices, and Smart DNS functionality make it a competitive option. However, the limit of three simultaneous connections may feel restrictive, especially given the service’s pricing.

Testing and Performance

My assessment of BulletVPN’s performance yielded mixed results. While some servers exhibited strong performance, others saw a significant drop in speed. Here are the speed metrics for my connection before activating the VPN:

And here are the speeds observed when connected to various US servers:

Additionally, the speed test results for a UK server were as follows:

Notably, BulletVPN did not exhibit DNS, WebRTC, or IPv6 leaks:

BulletVPN highlights its streaming capabilities, maintaining a list of services it can bypass geo-restrictions for. It is commendable that BulletVPN transparently admits it does not unblock Netflix US, unlike many providers that use Netflix US as a marketing ploy despite providing subpar access.

BulletVPN effectively bypasses geo-blocks for services such as Amazon Prime, CBS, HBO GO, HBO Now, Hulu, Pandora, and a range of other US and European channels. I encountered no issues streaming HBO:

However, my experience with BBC iPlayer was less satisfactory.

Despite BulletVPN offering seven UK servers, all of which displayed Belgian DNS, I encountered consistent issues accessing BBC iPlayer as it identified my location as outside the UK. After testing all seven servers, I successfully accessed BBC iPlayer only after reconnecting to the seventh server.

Privacy and Security

In terms of security, BulletVPN offers a range of protocols but lacks detailed information about the encryption methods used. While Open VPN support is provided, there is limited transparency regarding other security aspects. Further clarification on this would be beneficial.

BulletVPN’s Privacy Policy, Cookie Policy, and Terms of Service (ToS) are available. Notably, the Privacy Policy primarily addresses the use of BulletVPN’s website rather than the VPN service itself. Additionally, the website collects and retains data such as IP addresses, browser types, and page requests, which are retained as long as necessary to provide the service. While this practice is less than ideal, it is worth noting that BulletVPN has since updated its Privacy Policy to reflect a strict no-logs stance.

The ToS addresses VPN usage, stating that while BulletVPN does not log user activity (e.g., websites visited, emails, DNS lookups), it does maintain server access logs for troubleshooting purposes. The provider does not filter or censor online activities and will only disclose data under a court order, which is unlikely given their Estonian jurisdiction.

Overall, BulletVPN’s data handling practices do not raise significant concerns. The level of transparency is appreciated, and the basic session logs should not pose substantial risks for typical users seeking to stream their favorite content.
